About Our School

Welcome to

JSM

Johannes School of Music is a global network of music teachers dedicated to mentoring students. We currently offer Piano, Singing, Performance, Composition, Harmony, Counterpoint, Voice Leading, Musicology, Music Theory, and Pedagogy.

Our Leading Edge Mentors provide personalised one-on-one instruction either in-person or online. It was first established in Los Angeles, USA in 1996, in the pursuit of and commitment to excellence in music education.

For the very young beginner, we recommend studio lessons to develop strong aural perception skills, which are essential for online lessons. However, intermediate to advanced students have the option to begin directly with online lessons if preferred.

Committed to Excellence

As part of our commitment to fostering a sense of community, we offer students the chance to interact with peers and teachers through online master-classes held twice a year. These master classes can be accessed from anywhere in the world, or students may choose to attend in person at our headquarters in Queenstown, New Zealand, or San Diego, USA.

Additionally, we organise annual recitals and video recordings for social media platforms in both cities. We also have smaller centres in Christchurch, Wellington, Auckland, Sydney, and Los Angeles, based on the availability of teachers.

At Johannes, our primary focus is on meeting the individual student’s musical needs and preparing them for international proficiency testing conducted by renowned examination boards such as TCL, ABRSM, AMEB, and others.

Our programs aim to lead students towards diplomas, certifications, high school and college credits (subject to regulations of independent schools and colleges in various jurisdictions), as well as entrance matriculation to colleges and universities. For students in New Zealand, our central focus is the NZMEB (New Zealand Music Examinations Board), while AMEB is the focus for Australian students, and MTNA/GUILD/MTAC for American students. TCL is the preferred examination board for British, European, and worldwide students.

To ensure a fulfilling musical journey, we implement various teaching pedagogies such as Kodaly, Suzuki, Alexander Technique, and more. We tailor our approach to meet the unique needs of each student, including those who are gifted and talented, have special education requirements, or learning difficulties.

Our programs at JSM aim to prepare students for a career in music, whether in performance, composition, musicology, pedagogy, or simply to enrich their lives and find joy in music.

Learn a New Language

At Johannes, while English is the primary language of instruction, we provide a unique opportunity for parents of Spanish and French-speaking origin. Our second-language immersion program allows your child to pursue music courses spoken and written in their parents’ native tongue.

This special offering enables your child to fully embrace their heritage language while exploring the world of music, fostering a deep connection to their cultural roots. Empower your child to excel in music, all while preserving their linguistic heritage.

Embark on a linguistic journey and unlock the doors to new cultures and endless opportunities!

Mission Statement

At the Johannes School of Music, our mission is to inspire and empower students of all ages and skill levels to explore and develop their musical talents. We aim to nurture our students’ musical abilities by recognizing and respecting their natural response to sound.

We strive to create a supportive and inclusive environment where students can discover their passion for music and unlock their full potential. From as early as 4  years old, we shape their ear-training and aural perception skills, allowing them to recreate sounds through extemporisation on their chosen instrument.

We embrace a holistic approach to music education, teaching aural perception and notation skills concurrently. This includes introducing linear and spatial dimensions on paper, gradually progressing to full notation on manuscript.

We believe in fostering a well-rounded musical education that encompasses technical proficiency, artistic expression, creativity, and a deep understanding of music. We aim to cultivate a love for music while nurturing important skills such as discipline, perseverance, and self-confidence.

By integrating aural perception and notation skills, we cultivate our students’ awareness of sound, abstract thinking, melody writing, chord progressions, and improvisation. This comprehensive approach ultimately leads to the study of composition techniques.

In our nurturing environment, students gain the ability to comprehend and analyse these interconnected concepts, becoming well-rounded musicians. They develop stronger sight-reading skills and learn to expand their repertoire more efficiently.

Whether students aspire to pursue a professional career in music or simply want to enjoy the lifelong benefits of musical expression, our school is here to guide and support them every step of the way.

We also strive to create a vibrant musical community where students can connect and collaborate with fellow musicians through ensemble performances, recitals, workshops, and other engaging events. We believe in the power of music to bring people together, foster creativity, and enrich lives.

Ultimately, our mission is to ignite a lifelong passion for music, foster personal growth, and provide a solid foundation for students to thrive as musicians, performers, and music lovers.
